Pilates is a specific group of exercises that focuses on your body’s core, improving strength and flexibility. It targets the deep postural muscles of the abdomen and spine resulting in improved core stability. What do we mean when we say “core?” The core is the center of the body; it supports all other muscles and without it, movement is not possible. It is quite literally the backbone of movement. A strong core contributes to overall health, flexibility, better posture, and can be helpful for treating specific problems like back pain.
Unlike repetitions of lifting weights at the gym or running for miles on a treadmill, Pilates puts an emphasis on quality, not quantity, requiring concentration, precision, and control, while being mindful of breath. As each position is achieved, beginners can stay there while more advanced students can modify to something more challenging.
Developed over 100 years ago, Pilates has become one of the most popular forms of exercise in the United States. Studio M likes to think of Pilates as not only exercise, but therapy. Those with back problems, pelvic floor dysfunction (painful urination or incontinence, for example), poor posture, chronic pain, or weakened abdominal muscles can all benefit from Pilates. Because of its ability to heal the body, we like to think of Pilates as a form of physical therapy as well as great exercise. By regaining core strength, our bodies can heal.
